WHY EPI-PET SKIN TREATMENT SHOULD BE PART OF THE EVERY DAY VETERINARY PRACTICE

by Dr. Michael C. Fleck

There is a need for:

1.      Primary skin disease treatment

2.      Supportive care for other primary treatment for skin disease

3.      Preventative treatment either in reducing or eliminating the development of skin disease. While 70% of the pet population shows visible signs of unhealthy skin conditions requiring skin hydrating and enriching products and treatment, an argument can be made that all patients including dogs, cats and horses can benefit through the regular use of hydrating and skin enriching products and treatment programs.

Compatibility with what we do as veterinarians:

1.      Epi-Pet treatment and products are administered after diagnostic evaluation

2.      Skin is one of the organs evaluated during our routine wellness exams

3.      Epi-Pet is another viable treatment option in either treating skin disease or at least a part of the overall strategy for improving the overall health of the pet

4.      Diagnosis and treatment is part of the Attitude and Mind Set of the veterinarian

a)      Veterinarians treat disease in pets

b)      Veterinarians prevent the development of disease in pets

The Client (pet owner) “Lives” With The Pet Skin And Hair Coat Problems

1.      Esthetic pet skin problems are not always shared with the veterinary physician by the client during routine physical exams. Clients are more aware and concerned about esthetic skin problems in their pet than we give them credit for. If the veterinarian takes the time and effort to evaluate those conditions of the skin, the vet will discover that the clients are aware and concerned about those skin conditions. Pet owners don’t always think that esthetic skin problems such as dry, flaky, oily, itchy and smelly skin as well as shedding are part of “what the veterinarian does” as part of his or her job description. Veterinarians as well don’t always think that evaluating and treating esthetic skin problems in pets are “What they do.” Veterinarians sometimes partially treat esthetic skin problems by utilizing diet, oral vitamins and supplements like alpha omegas as a treatment approach. The pet owner unfortunately receives counsel from either poorly qualified pet shop or supermarket clerks or they simply perform their own investigative study when trying to improve the pets unpleasant odors, excessive hair loss, itching and flaking. Why let the non-professionals determine treatment methods for our patients. Veterinarians are best equipped with a knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the patient’s skin and hair coat.

2.      Before the Epi-Pet skin treatment program, most esthetic skin treatments were done exclusively through “shampoo therapy”.

3.      The Epi-Pet Skin Treatment therapy emphasizes the use of Epi-Pet’s Hydrating Skin Enrichment Sprays that provide skin and hair conditioners, state of the art moisturizers, anti-itch ingredients, insect repelling ingredients and aroma therapy agents. A proper preparation of the skin through mechanical exfoliation (brushing with a wire bristled brush) is the first part of the Epi-Pet Skin Treatment Application. Spraying the Epi-Pet Hydrating Skin Enriching Spray on the patient’s body is the second part of the treatment application. Brushing the product into the skin first using a metal bristled brush then using a soft bristled brush is the third part of the treatment application. Cleansing of the skin and hair coat is somewhat de-emphasized in the Epi-Pet skin treatment approach since most pet owners over cleanse their pets. This over cleansing strips the skin of its natural oils which are necessary for it to perform its normal physiological functions and the excessive exposure to detergents and mechanical exfoliation also irritates the skin. A judicious choice of shampoos and shampooing procedures are important. Non-aggressive monthly cleansings of the pet is recommended for the average pet. A regular skin hydrating treatment program should be established to help the pet maintain a healthy skin and hair coat. Of course, therapeutic protocol for shampooing and subsequent hydrating skin spray treatment programs are determined by the attending veterinarian with adjustments being made according to the severity and degree of skin disease.

4.      Epi-Pet Cleansing Agent Shampoo is unique among the pet industry shampoos.

It contains all the ingredients of the enrichment sprays so it is compatible with the Epi-Pet treatment protocol. The Epi-Pet shampoo cleanses, moisturizes, exfoliates and conditions the skin and hair coat while adding aromatherapy.
